Skydiving in Australia

A great destination…

For many people, when Australia comes up in conversation, all they can think of is kangaroos, the outback and “putting another shrimp on the barbie”. While those are all available in Australia (although they might not appreciate your excessive use of the shrimp on the barbie joke), there is a whole lot more that Australia has to offer people who are passing through, especially if you’re into skydiving.

One of the things that makes Australia unique in terms of skydiving, is that the country is absolutely full of wide open spaces. While the outback is pretty well known, most of the center of Australia is completely deserted. While this isn’t great for tourism, it is excellent for skydivers. As you probably know already, skydiving requires lots of wide open spaces, and when you have that much wide open space, there’s almost no limit to where you can jump.

Many people who are on a budget tend to avoid Australia as a destination because of how expensive it can be to travel there. Right now, Australia is one of the most expensive countries in the world, with cities like Sydney an Melbourne topping the lists of almost every list of the world’s most expensive cities. While many people doing the much cheaper Southeast Asia trail would love to add a stop to Australia into their itinerary, many simply believe they can’t afford it.

In reality, there are many ways to do Australia on the cheap, you just need to be a little creative. Most hotel rooms do cost close to $100 per night, although a bed in a hostel can be much closer to $20 per night. That’s a lot closer to what a hotel room costs in Southeast Asia, and while you won’t get your own private room in Australia, you will at least be able to get a good night’s sleep. There are also many places around where you can find budget meals that won’t eat away at your bank account, causing you to have to cut your travels short.

At the same time though, skydiving in Australia is actually a bargain by comparison. The average price for one jump in Australia is only $300, which is a bit higher than other places, but given how much more expensive everything else is in Australia, it suddenly doesn’t seem too bad anymore. If you’re interested in going skydiving in Australia, you could always take advantage of the excellent views, and plan to spend only a few days there looking at around at other touristy things so it doesn’t completely eat away at your budget.

Skydiving as a beginner in Australia

Lots of people who go skydiving in Australia are doing so for the very first time. They have lots of concerns and also a lot of misconceptions about what going skydiving actually entails. One of the biggest concerns most people have is whether or not going skydiving in Australia is safe.

The truth is, Australia is a highly developed country just like the United States or Canada. They take safety regulations very seriously in Australia and that goes double for skydiving operators. Any skydiving operator knows how important it is for them to follow all safety regulations at all times, and as a result, the amount of skydiving accidents in Australia are practically non-existent.

Speaking of skydiving accidents, the amount of skydiving accidents that occur globally only add up to a total of 60 per year. That might seem like a lot, as that’s about one every week, but in reality it’s very few, especially when compared to how many people go skydiving each and every year. Beyond that, most of those skydiving accidents are not with beginners but with experienced skydivers who pushed the envelope just a bit too far. This means they either performed risky maneuvers which were out of their range of ability, or they jumped on a day when the weather simply wasn’t suitable for it.

When you jump for the first time, unless you are extremely brave and willing to undergo a lot of training beforehand, you won’t be jumping all by yourself. Instead, you will be jumping with a jumpmaster literally strapped to your back. A jumpmaster is a professional skydiver who has over 500 jumps on their record, although most jumpmasters have more than 1,000 jumps, since they do several jumps every day.

You will show up at the drop zone early in the morning and watch a training video and get familiar with how to use all of your equipment. Even though you will be jumping with a jumpmaster, they want to be sure you’re able to use your equipment in the minuscule chance that something goes wrong during your jump that leaves your jumpmaster unable to assist you. This training session generally doesn’t last very long at all, as most of the information can be gone over quite quickly.

Once you finish the training session, you’ll head up in the plane with your jumpmaster and fly over the area in which you’ll be jumping. At this point, some people do still back out, but most people are brave enough to make the big leap by this point. If you truly want to jump, but you’re still scared, your jumpmaster can help to give you that final nudge that you really need to get you out of the plane.

Once you start free falling, almost all fear goes immediately out the window. Your jumpmaster is in full control of everything going on and will know exactly when to pull the parachute. All you have to do is enjoy the ride. Once you reach the correct altitude, the jumpmaster will pull the parachute and will then guide you safely down to the ground. By the time they hit the ground, most people say they had such a great time, that they can’t wait to head up there and do it all over again. Some people actually do head right up there and jump all over again, as they don’t need to go through the training session an additional time.

When you jump with a jumpmaster, so much of the process is taken care of for you, and there’s so little chance of something going wrong, you’re practically guaranteed to have a great time.
